Q: Is Enchanted iMages a publisher? A: No. We are a publishing service. We charge a fee to help artists, digital artists and photographers self-publish professionally designed books of their work. Q: Are you a vanity press? A: No. Vanity presses pretend to be publishers but charge authors hidden fees. We are very clear up front that we charge a fee to help artists get their work into print. Q: What services do you offer then? A: We use digital tools like Photoshop, Word and Indesign to create a print-ready file that we send to the printer. We handle everything from obtaining ISBN numbers, cover creation, copy editing, book layout, and more. Q: How much does it cost to produce a book? A: Cost varies, depending on which services you choose. Printing costs vary depending on how many books you order, page count, and book size. Q: What do I have to do? A: You supply the content: all the images and text that will go into your book. Our 10 Step Process To Being Published is here. Q: But I'm an artist, not a writer! A: That's ok, we have writers and copy editors available to help. Q: What image formats do you need? A: Information about our image format requirements can be found here. Q: Who keeps the copyright to my work? A: You do. As a service, we help you get your work into book form, but as the indicia page in your book will clearly state, you are the copyright holder of the book. Q: Will you help market my book? A: No. We're a publishing service, not a publisher or marketing service. We work with established artists who already have a body of work, and who are active in their arts community, attending shows, fairs, and galleries – artists who have an established market for their work. Q: Will my book sell? A: By self-publishing a book of your art you are making an investment in your work and your art career. Chances are, if you are selling your paintings, you can sell a book of your paintings. Like any investment, there is no guarantee of success. Q: How much should I sell my book for? A: That's entirely up to you. If you're selling paintings for $500 -$1000 each, you shouldn't have trouble selling a book of your work for $25 - $40, depending on how many pages the book has. You can charge much more if you do a signed and numbered limited edition. Remember you can always place discount or sale stickers over the printed price on your book. See the Profitability Worksheet here. Q: Can I make money self-publishing? A: If you can sell your books, yes! Our publishing service is designed for artists and photographers who already attend galleries, fairs and art shows and thus have a established market ready for a book of their work. Our Book Packages are designed to maximize profitability. See the Profitability Worksheet here. Q: Why do your Book Packages only come in lots of 250 books? A: We've found that print runs of 250 offer the ideal balance between cost and return on investment. Printers base their rates on volume: the more books you print, the cheaper the cost per book. Instant Publisher offers important price breaks when you order 250 books. Order less, and the price per book goes way up, making profitability more difficult. Order more, and the price per book goes down, but you have to deal with more inventory than most self-published artists' and photographers want to handle. Q: What if my print run sells out? Can I reprint? How much will it cost? A: Yes! We charge a nominal fee to change the edition information and date on the indicia page of your book ("second printing," "third printing") etc. You pay for the printing and shipping costs. Profitability is much greater on reprints. Q: Do you print the books yourself? A: No. We work with Instant Publisher, a high-quality printing service that specializes in small press books. We have used them to publish many full color books and the quality of their work has been consistently high. Q: Why can't I just go directly to Instant Publisher? A: You can! Here's their link: www.instantpublisher.com. Our publishing service is for those who don't have a full suite of digital tools or the expertise to put together a publishable book. We've spent years learning the ins and outs of pre-press and book layout for publication and we want to use that experience to help other artists get their own work into print. If you can do that on your own, you don't need us! Q: Do you publish text-based books? A: No. We specialize in books that focus on images: drawings, artwork, sculpture, photography, or digital art. Q: What if I change my mind halfway through the project? Do you offer refunds? A: Partial refunds are possible depending on how much work has been done on your book project. Once a book is sent to the printer, the book project becomes non-refundable. See our refund policy here. |
