A fierce competitor of his friend and colleague, C.N. Landon, W.L. Evans began his influential home correspondence course in 1907. For the next 30+ years he taught hundreds of students the ins and outs of drawing comics for newspapers, including E.C. Segar (Popeye), Chester Gould (Dick Tracy), Hank Ketcham (Dennis the Menace), Lank Leonard (Mickey Finn), Ward Kimball (Disney), Norman Bel Geddes (industrial designer), William Nolan (animator), and Dean Cornwall (illustrator).
